First off, I saw something about him and his partner, Lance LePere. Twenty-one years! That’s…wow. They got married in New York, apparently in a rush to take advantage of the new gay marriage law. Like, can you imagine the stress? “Gotta get hitched before they change their minds!” (Okay, maybe not, but it’s fun to picture). It’s kinda sweet, you know? After all that time, finally able to tie the knot. Good for them, seriously.
And then there’s the whole “Pride” thing. I saw something about him saying that “Pride is celebrating the freedom to live your life as your true self.” Which, yeah, it’s a quote you hear a lot, but I kinda believe him. I mean, the guy’s used his platform and his brand to actually *do* stuff. He’s not just slapping a rainbow on a t-shirt and calling it a day (though, okay, *he does* slap a rainbow on stuff). But he’s also, you know, donated profits and stuff.
I think that’s kinda a big deal, especially in the fashion world. I mean, let’s be honest, there’s a lot of “rainbow washing” going on, where companies pretend to be supportive just to cash in on the LGBTQ+ community. It’s like, “Oh, look at us, we’re so progressive!” while their labor practices are, like, super questionable or something. So seeing Kors actually put his money where his mouth is, it’s refreshing.
I think one thing that’s always been on my mind is how the late 70s were driven by gay people and people of color. Now, I’m not an expert on fashion history or anything but the fact that Kors remembers something like that is awesome.
